Codec: A rather imprecise term. In hardware -- "enCoder-Decoder". A hardware codec is generally a device that provides both digital to analog and analog to digital conversion. In software -- "Compression-Decompression". A software codec is usually an algorithm or program that compresses or unpacks data. The term 'codec' is generally encountered with regard to audio and video data and most frequently with regards to "plug-in" software used for sending, receiving, or presenting audio or video.
