I2O

1/17/98

I2O - I2O is a PC Input/Output Architecture being released in 1998. I2O provides a uniform communications layer between classes of I/O devices and Operating Systems. The intent is to allow hardware vendors to create hardware controllers that interface upwards in a uniform manner and interface with generic drivers in the operating systems. This is intended to reduce or eliminate the need for OS specific driver software.

I2O Support is expected in Windows NT5.0, SCO Unix, and Netware.

Conceptually I2O will eventually be able to provide device to device data transfers without CPU mediation.
