MCKINLEY

11/21/98

McKinley: An advanced 64 bit CPU to be released in late 2001 to replace the initial 64 bit offering - codenamed Merced. McKinley will probably be fabricated using a .12 micron process and released at a clock speed of 1GHz. It is projected to execute about twice as many instructions per second as Merced. Intel's performance projections for future products have sometimes proved to be overly optimistic.

The performance improvement in McKinley is expected to come from optimizing the implementation of the IA-64 instruction set which will first appear in Merced.
