PROTECTED MODE

6/27/98

Protected Mode -- On 80286 and later Intel CPUs a mode is offered that allows accessing large amounts of memory directly and that traps attempts by users to perform operations that might permit user programs to accidentally or deliberately override, destroy, or usurp the Operating system. 'Protected mode' protects the operating system and also removes the Real Mode restriction that all code must reside in 1 Megabyte (roughly) of memory.
