SDX - Storage Data Acceleration: SDX is a technology announced by Western Digital that provides a direct interface from CDROMs and (potentially) other devices via a cache on an IDE(?) hard drive with data transfer managed by the hard drive electronics. The attached devices will be connected to the hard drive by a ten connector cable and will share the data interface from the hard drive to the PC. It is projected that moving CDROM caching to the hard drive will simplify the CDROM -- reducing it's cost, and will improve CDROM performance significantly. The affect of SDX on hard drive cost and performance is not addressed in the press release.
