Universal PNP (UPNP): A Microsoft initiative similar to Sun Microsystem's Jini system. UPNP is intended to allow a wide variety of computer and appliance products to automatically identify themselves to each other and configure themselves. It differs from Jini in being COM (Common Object Model) based rather than Java based. Both UPNP and Jini were announced around the end of 1998.

UPNP and Jini both appear to work by allowing devices connected to a network to be accessed as "objects" -- e.g. Java Classes or COM Objects. Presumably this could allow thermostats, door sensors, etc to be hooked up to a network.

Ship dates, real or projected, are unknown
