In a deposit of brown coal(lignite) 3-4.5km E of Brandon VT just West of the Green Mountain front. The material is in a complex mixture of layers of (water deposited?) 'brown coal',sand,gravel,clay, manganese ore and hematite. It was discovered in the mid-ninteenth century by underground miners attempting to access the hematite.
