Magnolia(Area)DuplinNCSee https://www.carolana.com/NC/eBooks/The_Coastal_Plain_of_North_Carolina_1912.pdf p244. There are several presumably small sinkhole and other exposures in the area of the village of Magnolia, Duplin County, NC. I have been unable to locate any sign of them on modern satellite maps. They may be overgrown or someplace other than where I'm looking. They include two shallow ponds about 800m W of Magnolia; a dry 6 or 8 m deep depression about 1.2km W of Magnolia;two old marl pits about 1.6km E of Magnolia(Wilson property);a drainage ditch about 2.4km N of Magnolia just E of the RR;marl pits along a small branch(stream) about 4.8km NE of Magnolia (Kornegay Property). One source indicates that it is likely that a large area around Magnolia is underlain at depths of 1 to 6 meters by fossiliferous Duplin Marl.See also, the entry for Magnolia(NaturalWell) Pliocene? mollusks. Magnolia(NaturalWell)DuplinNCIn the late 19th century, over 200 species (mostly mollusks) were attributed to exposures at a sinkhole on the Mathews property 3.2km SW of Magnolia known as Natural Well. The exposure is described as a circular pond 10m in diameter with a vertical face 10m high on one side and a slope on the other. The name Natural Well seems no longer to be in use. I MAY have located it using Google satellite maps. ... Or not. This is the type locality for the Pliocene Duplin Formation. There seems to be some doubt that all the specimens attributed to the site were actually collected there, but it is likely quite fossil rich.
