Introduction

In previous terrane discussions, I have stuck to areas that geologists recognize as "terranes", but now we have come to the biggie for North Americans -- the rocks at the core of the North American continent. The area involved is very large. As is the number of formations and groups. Fortunately, it can be subdivided reasonably easily into Eastern and Western parts separated by a wide belt of Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks in the Great Plains that separates the two halves. This West Laurentian terrane includes Triassic and older rocks found in the Black Hills, West Texas, Western Oklahoma and the Rocky Mountain foothills and everything West to the Pacific other than a couple of minor terranes near the Pacific Coast. Jurassic and younger rocks are described in the Mid-continent-sea and Pacific Margin terranes.

The pattern of depositation in the Western Laurentian Paleozoic is not as consistent as that in East Laurentia. With the exception of a long sequence of Cambrian marine rocks transgressing Eastward all the way to the Rockies as time passed, the rocks seem to consist mostly of discontinuous marine rocks of various ages becoming less common as one moves later in time. There are few continental rocks and virtually none of the coals that are so common in the Upper Paleozoic of Eastern Laurentia.

It is a member of the Lardeau Group -- a sequence of unfossiliferous clastic sediments found in the Kootenay Terrane whose age is constrained by Lower Cambrian and Mississippian fossils in underlying and overlying beds.

A term for non-silaceous Devonian and Mississippian silty shales found in NorthEast British Columbia. Although it is laterally equivalent to the Warneford Formation/Gunsteel Formation it mostly overlies the Gunsteel Formation and is mostly overlain by the Warneford Formation. It is not to be confused with the older Akie Reef Formation/ It is a member of the Earn Group

The Campito has a small fauna of very early trilobites.

Fossils: Unknown. Marine invertebrates are said to be common in some beds of the Fish Haven Dolomite and sparse, but present in the Bluebell Dolomite So probably at least a few fossils, maybe a lot.
