GULF COAST DEPOSITS

Introduction

The origin of the Gulf of Mexico is not well understood. It appears that it developed during the Early to Mid Mesozoic as Modern North America separated from the supercontinent of Pangea. Structurally it seems to be a deep basin that has partially formed by depression of the same Permian and Triassic beds exposed in at the Western edge of the great plains in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and New Mexico. Its Southern portion is a deep sea bottom formed as South America moved away to the South and later mostly closed off by material moved in from the West by plate tectonics. At it's deepest point, the Gulf of Mexico is more than four kilometers deep.

Although Jurassic beds are found subsurface in the Western Gulf, they are rarely, if ever, exposed. On the surface Lower Cretaceous through modern sediments ring the Gulf with the older sediments found inland and more recent sediments laid down in belts as one approaches the coast. Cretaceous sediments are found up the Mississippi valley as far North as Southern Illinois. Much more extensive deposits associated with a mid-Cretaceous sea that ran from the Gulf to the Arctic are found further West and are covered in the discussion of the Mid-Continent Sea Terrane.

The Rocks

I have included Georgia in both the GULF and ATLANTIC Margin Terranes. Gerogia includes sequences using both GULF and ATLANTIC terminology. On the West, Texas includes large areas of Cretaceous rock that merges cleanly into GULF formations on the East. But further to the West, the Cretaceous rocks become more similar to those of the MID-CONTINENT Terrane.
